Pirkei Avot

Pirkei Avot

The end of each Chapter states the following:

“The Holy One Blessed is He, wished to confer merit on Israel therefore he gave us Torah and Mitzvot in abundance. As it says ‘God desired for the sake of Israel’s righteousness that the Torah be made great and glorious” Isaiah 60:21 This is by giving us the opportunity of performing so many Mitzvot God graciously provided them with the means of acquiring abundant merit.

Mishnah's

1:17 Shimon said -Not the study but practice is the main thing.

2:1 Rabbi said- Be as scrupulous in the performance of a minor Mitzvah as with a major Mitzvah for you do not know the reward for the respective Mitzvahs. Calculate the cost of the Mitzvah against the reward and the reward of sin against its cost. Consider 3 things and you will not sin

Know what is above you –a watchful Eye an attentive Ear and all your deeds are recorded in a book.

2:17 Rabbi Jose said –let all your deeds be for the sake of Heaven.

4.2 Ben Azai says “Run to perform even a minor Mitzvah and flee from sin, for a Mitzvah leads to another Mitzvah and a sin leads to another, for the consequence of a Mitzvah is a Mitzvah for the consequence of a sin is a sin.

4:13 Rabbi Eliezer ben Yaakov said “He who fulfils a single Mitzvah gains himself a single advocate and he who commits a single transgression gains a single accuser.

Repentance and good deeds are a shield against retribution.

4:22 Rabbi Yaakov used to say- Better is one hour of repentance and good deeds in this world than the entire World to Come, and better one hour of spiritual bless in the World to Come than all life of this world.

5:24 Rabbi Judah ben Tema said “be strong as a leopard, light as an eagle, swift as a deer and brave as a lion to do the will of your father who is in heaven.”

5:25 At 13-year-old one is obligated in Mitzvoth
